My company bought a drone to use for tracking job site progress from the air. I’m the designated operator.
It's really easy to fly until I flew over a cop car and the camera feed cut out from radio interference. Flew it into a tree. Won't make that mistake again.

The FAA recently provided a letter of exemption for a company giving the authorization to fly a bunch of different drones (I still hate that word) for commercial purposes. A letter from the FAA is required to fly for commercial purposes and there are a bunch of rules you have to follow. If the cops you crashed near had asked, you would have had to provide your letter of exemption to them.
I just happen to have the same quadcopter for work. We just made the decision not to fly it since we don’t have a letter of exemption, we don’t have a licensed pilot to fly it (one of the requirements for the letter), and we don’t have a clear way to insure it in case of an accident.

Wow I had no idea all those restrictions apply. So I guess I'll just be a random guy not associated with the company when I'm flying it.

Check out the Gizmodo article. From there you can read the letter which includes the restrictions.

One of my friends bought one of those. It was only $300. That’s still expensive, but I thought drones would cost around $1,000.
